Businesses hit in Migori due to Cord protests

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices and business premises in Migori Town remained closed as Cord supporters took to the streets for the third week demanding the disbandment of the electoral body.

Traders locked their premises for fear of looting during the demonstration.

Protesters begun filtering out to the streets in the early hours of the morning.

Suna West MP Joseph Ndiege led the protesters to the deserted IEBC offices with anti –riot police guarding the offices.

The protesters maintained that they will not be intimidated by the police and will continue with the demonstrations until the Commission is disbanded.

They were addressed by their leaders outside the IEBC offices before they retreated to the town streets where they burnt tyres and blocked traffic on the major roads.

Security officers under the command of the county police boss David Kirui monitored the protestors from their police cars.

In Nyamira County, the protest failed to take off after the organizers failed to turn up.

And in Kisii town the demo organizers were still holed in a hotel by noon still ‘strategizing with the turn up still low.

Businesses were still operating normally and there was little presence of anti-riot police on the streets.
