Former workers of the closed African Safari Club Beach Resort want to be paid more than Sh295 million in outstanding salaries and terminal dues.

The 756 former staff have been camping outside the residence of the late Swiss owner of the hotel chain, Mr Karl Jacob Ruedin, since June 18, 2011.

The ex-employees claimed Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi had ignored them despite promising to act when they presented their grievances to him last December.

At a joint press conference with Kenya Muslims National Advisory Council at Panaroma Hotel in Mombasa on Thursday, workers’ representative Jacob Kalama said their tribulations started several years ago when the hotel chain collapsed.

Since they started demanding their dues and camping in structures at the compound of the proprietor, 15 of the former employees had died and the rest feared that they would also die before getting paid.
