A herder was shot dead and another one injured after bandits attacked a village in Marti, Samburu County.

The attackers stole 128 animals in the 3pm raid.

The injured herder was shot in the arm and is being treated at Maralal District Hospital.

Residents claim the attackers raided the village that is near a police post Tuesday afternoon.

They accused police officers of failing to respond when the bandits attacked.

A villager, Mr Pius Lekunte, said the raiders stole his 30 cows. He alleged that officers did not leave the police post to pursue the attackers.

Marti MCA Romano Leakono condemned the attack and asked the police to bring the attackers to book.

Samburu County Coordinating Commander Washington Ajuga said a team led by County Commissioner Mohammed Birik had visited the area.

The attack came three days after Mr Birik and Samburu North MP Alois Lentoimaga held a peace meeting in the area.
