Mandera MCAs deny assault charges

Three Members of the Mandera County Assembly have denied three charges of assault and another of damage of property at a Mandera court.

Ward representatives Issack Dahir (Rhamu) Abdilatif Adan Haro (Kotulo) and Hadi Madey (Ashabito) were charged with physically assaulting Ibrahim Gedi, Mohamed Mustafa and Siyad Bashir last week.

The MCAs denied a forth count of damaging property belonging to the county including a Mace, four goose neck gadgets, four mace stands, eight batteries, eight battery covers and a window screen all valued at Sh315, 000.

Mandera resident magistrate Duncan Mtai ordered that the accused be supplied with copies of witness statements and any other document needed before hearing of the matter on April 11.

Mr Dahir is separately charged with threatening to kill and assaulting Robow Hassan, the Mandera County Assembly majority leader.

He pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond of Sh100,000 with a surety of similar amount or a cash bail of Sh30,000.

The accused were arrested on Monday after chaos erupted in the Mandera County assembly hall after the assembly majority leader attempted to re-introduce a rejected supplementary budget bill.

Mr Dahir is serving a three day suspension from county assembly for gross misconduct.

On March 15, he grabbed the assembly mace and dropped it in a pit latrine halting daily business at the assembly.
