Police to summon Waiguru over gun drama at rally

Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru will be summoned by police over chaos at her rally in Kibingo Market, Kirinyaga County, that left three people injured.

County Police Commander David Kirui said the Jubilee gubernatorial candidate will be asked to record a statement at Kerugoya Police Station over the incident.

Mr Kirui said the police went to the rally after they heard gunshots and they want to question witnesses before taking any action.

"We are planning to summon Ms Waiguru so that she can explain to us what happened and record her statement," said Mr Kirui.

The police boss said several other witnesses had been interrogated by the police and Ms Waiguru is the last person expected to record a statement.

Mr Kirui warned that hooliganism would not be tolerated in the region and those who were involved in causing chaos during the Tuesday rally would be arrested and prosecuted.

He advised candidates to ask for police security when they hold rallies.

"Ms Waiguru did not inform us that she had a rally that day. We only responded when we heard gunshots fired by her bodyguards," he added.

Mr Kirui said chaos erupted when some people demanded to be given cash following Ms Waiguru's speech. They are alleged to have attacked Ms Waiguru’s convoy when their demands were not met.

DISPERSE

One of the victims, Samuel Nging'i, one person attacked him with a knife and injured his finger and face.

Another victim, Elikanah Mang'ethia, said he was aboard one of the campaign vehicles when the youth blocked the road forcing the driver to stop.

"When we stopped, the youth pulled me out of the vehicle and beat me as they demanded money," he said.

He said that at one point, the attackers attempted to burn the damaged vehicle but police intervened and dispersed them.

A third victim, who identified himself as Mr Waweru, said he the rowdy youth chased him and beat him up when they caught up with him.
