What you need to know:

  • Governor Jack Ranguma had argued that Thurdibuoro Secondary School, where the results were announced, is located in a remote area.
  • Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga said it was unfortunate for the governor to make such a statement when he is the governor of the whole county and should treat every part of it, including Thurdibuoro, equally.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga has faulted her boss Jack Ranguma's decision to defend his seat as an independent candidate.

She said the governor was wrong in allegedly profiling some parts of the county as remote.

Ms Odinga took issue with Mr Ranguma’s remarks Thursday that Thurdibuoro in Nyakach Sub-County is a remote area.

She said she will support Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o in his bid for the Kisumu governorship.

Announcing his decision to vie as an independent candidate, Mr Ranguma said the ODM county returning officer erred when he declared Prof Nyong’o the winner of the primaries in Thurdibuoro.

He argued that Thurdibuoro Secondary School, where the results were announced, is located in a remote area and ought not to have been used as the county’s tallying centre.

“Thurdibuoro, where the results were declared, is located in a remote area, 70 kilometres from Kisumu Town,” the governor said.

But Ms Odinga said it was unfortunate for the governor to make such a statement when he is the governor of the whole county and should treat every part of it, including Thurdibuoro, equally.

“How can you refer to part of your county as remote? This means you do not mean well for some parts of the county and therefore there is no need for you to ask for their votes.

"Nyakach is part of Kisumu County and they equally deserve development,” she said.
