Uhuru in Nyamira on second day of vote hunt in Gusiiland

After making a tour of Kisii Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta takes his vote hunting mission to Nyamira County before heading to Kakamega later in the day.

He will make stops at Ikonge, Ekerenyo, Nyamaiya, Nyamira Town, Kimera, Magombo, Rigoma and Nyansiongo.

Mr Kenyatta is Wednesday expected to give Sh470 million to integrated internally displaced people in Nyamira.

While speaking in Kisii on Tuesday, the President said the government will ensure all victims of the 2007/2008 post-election violence in Gusiiland are compensated.

Gusii region, comprising both Nyamira and Kisii counties has a total of 14,000 registered IDPs.

The head of State asked leaders to be cautious not to repeat the 2007/08 post-election chaos, saying Kenyans would never again shed blood because of elections.

INTEGRATED IDPS

In Kisii, he presented a Sh358 million cheque to be distributed to about 7,000 out of the 9,000 IDPs in the county.

The beneficiaries are expected to each receive Sh50,000 out of the Sh200,000 they had sought from the government.

“It was important that we first sort out those in camps and we are glad that you were received by your relatives after being evicted. I plead with you not to go back to politics that will bring us new IDPs. Let us focus on issue-based politics,” said Mr Kenyatta.

ODM

In 2013, Nyamira County predominantly voted for ODM with the President garnering 54,071 votes (29.8 per cent) while Mr Raila Odinga got 121,590 votes (67.1 per cent).

In his tour of Nyamira, the head of State will be welcomed by local Jubilee leaders among them Walter Nyambati (governor candidate), Joseph Kiangoi (senatorial candidate), Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango candidate).

Mr Nyabati is seeking to unseat Governor John Nyagarama while Mr Kiangoi is seeking to take over from the incumbent Senator Kennedy Mong'are.

Mr Mong'are who had earlier said he would vie for the presidency is now contesting the county’s governorship seat.
