Police rescue woman held hostage by prison warder

  • Constable Douglas Asuma grabbed a gun from a newly posted colleague on Monday morning and tried to shoot his female lover at a park but missed and hit a another woman who was rushed to Githongo Hospital in critical condition.
  • The warder then grabbed the woman, his lover, who works in the prison and held her hostage together with two children in his house adjacent to the prison.
  • Armed officers from Kariene Police station cordoned off the house and asked members of the public to keep off as the warder shot in the air.

There was tension as Uruku GK Prison in Meru County after a prison warder went on a shooting spree and holding a woman hostage.

Constable Douglas Asuma grabbed a gun from a newly posted colleague on Monday morning and tried to shoot his female lover at a park but missed and hit a another woman who was rushed to Githongo Hospital in critical condition.

The warder then grabbed the woman, his lover, who works in the prison and held her hostage together with two children in his house adjacent to the prison.

Armed officers from Kariene Police station cordoned off the house and asked members of the public to keep off as the warder shot in the air.

However, he later let the two children to leave and remained with the woman in the house as officers tried to persuade him to also let her go.

Imenti Central police boss Boniface Lisiolo led the operation.

After hours of tension, the warden surrendered the gun through a window before he surrendered to police.
