Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has pledged to work with MCAs to fight corruption and wastage of resources in the county.

Speaking at the official opening of the County Assembly of Nakuru on Thursday, Mr Kinyanjui said the future of the county depends on how it tames corruption.

“I want to assure the residents of Nakuru that I will work closely with the assembly to ensure it enacts proper laws to curb this corruption menace,” he said.

He urged the assembly to draft stringent anti-corruption laws.

AGRICULTURE

The governor observed that the county is faced with development challenges that will require concerted efforts to resolve.

Some of the areas he urged the MCAs to prioritise as they settle to work include agriculture, which is the back bone of county’s economy with 70 per cent of the residents relying on it for their survival.

The governor said if agriculture is expanded and made more lucrative, a huge portion of the population will benefit and livelihoods would be improved.

He said seed propagation and marketing would improve value addition and create wealth for the residents.

He called on the MCAs to address woes facing the pyrethrum sector saying if well nurtured it has the potential to employ and improve economy of the county.

SHORTAGE

The governor said research has shown that the county has potential to grow macadamia, avocado and other crops that enjoy a huge demand globally.

He said his government will work closely with water companies to address the challenge of shortage.

According to the governor, sewer expansion remains a challenge due to increased urbanisation in Nakuru town, creating environmental challenges that result in the outbreak of water borne diseases.

He said he will partner with development agencies and the national government to expand the sewer network.

To ease congestion in Nakuru town, two bypasses will be constructed and a satellite centre created.

He said the county’s health care system has been seriously affected by strikes but said a task force he appointed is expected to resolve the issue.
