A university student, who reportedly jumped from a speeding car to escape an attempted kidnap, is fighting for her life at a Nakuru hospital.

Ms Abigail Muthoni, 20, a third-year student at Egerton University, has been lying unconscious at Valley Hospital for three weeks.

Ms Muthoni’s grandfather Michael Gichihi said he got a call on January 28 while at home in Nyeri, informing him that the girl had been found in a ditch at Ngata area near Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology.

“I rushed to Nakuru to find out what the problem was,” Mr Gichihi said.

He said that his granddaughter could not speak, move or breathe on her own when he saw her in hospital.

“I was advised to report the matter to Kaptembwa Police Station,” he said.

Ms Muthoni’s friend, only identified as Pamela, said the two had been invited for drinks in town by a man whom they were introduced to by Muthoni’s male friend. She said the man is a worker at Egerton University.

After having drinks, the man offered to drop them at their place in Kanyoni.

She said the man changed mind and drove the car in a different direction, prompting them to jump out.

A report by Dr Moses Oketch shows Ms Muthoni suffered severe brain damage and had deep cuts in her abdomen with bruises on the legs and shoulders.

“We have conducted a second head scan and our radiologists want to see if there is a blood clot in the brain,” the surgeon said.

Ms Muthoni’s grandmother, Beatrice Wacera, wept uncontrollably on seeing her. She called for the arrest of the suspect.
