The accident involving a lorry and a saloon car occurred at around 11pm, two kilometres from Naromoru town, sparking protests from residents of the area who barricaded the road for the better part of Tuesday morning.

Witnesses recounted that the lorry that was headed towards Nanyuki town was speeding and on the wrong lane when it rammed into the saloon car with five occupants.

Four people, two men and two women, who were in the saloon car all died on the spot.

The injured passenger was taken to Nanyuki Referral hospital with multiple fractures and in critical condition.

According to one of the deceased victim’s relative, the five had just left work and were headed home when tragedy struck killing the four, all from the same locality of Burguret in Kieni East.

“They were all headed home and my brother had given them a lift. It is a big loss to us,” said Mr Mwangi Kimani, one of the relatives.

The driver of the lorry is said to have ran away soon after the fatal crash.

Kieni East OCPD Michael Mbaluku has said investigations have been launched and a manhunt for the driver who is in hiding on as well.

“Investigations are ongoing to try and establish what exactly transpired but it is too early to say who was in fault,” said Mr Mbaluku.

Residents of the area protested that the section of the road has become a black spot.

They pointed fingers at Lorries and buses which they claimed are driven carelessly and at high speed.

“These vehicles completely disregard the traffic rules and are driven dangerously. Relevant authorities should step in and act fast,” said Mr Mwangi.
