In December 2023, Railway Training Institute’s (RTI’s) Kisumu Marine School was accredited by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) to offer Basic Marine Safety Training (STCW Training).

STCW refers to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers.

The training takes 10 days, and so far, three cohorts have completed the course.

RTI is offering people who want to work at sea the opportunity to acquire skills on basic marine safety. This training comes in handy for all types of professionals who will find themselves working aboard shipping vessels. Graduates are linked with shipping lines to work aboard cargo ships or cruise ships.

People who want to undertake this course should have acquired training that can be applied in the marine industry. Those who have undertaken hospitality training (and may end up working aboard ships) are eligible to apply for the course. Those who have studied aquaculture qualify as well. The list of those who would benefit from the training thus goes beyond professionals who run ships, to others who provide key services that may be needed in these vessels.

The training thus makes graduates competitive in the marine industry job market. Understanding the risks inherent in seafaring and the necessary safety measures arms the professional with vital safety skills. The training at the Kisumu Marine School is thus helping the country meet the requirements of skilled marine manpower.

In other developments, RTI is open to strategic collaborations within the country and internationally. The Institute has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Utalii College to train in tourism and hospitality. Under this arrangement, hospitality graduates from Utalii will be trained at the Kisumu Marine School on basic marine safety to enhance their employability in the marine industry and cruise ships.

East Africans are encouraged to take this early opportunity to book for training in marine safety to mitigate adverse environmental effects caused by floods, reduce and manage marine accidents and incidences, and enhance compliance with the International Maritime Organisation requirements for safe operations in the region. It is time to refocus on a sustainable blue economy.

Meanwhile, the RTI Nairobi campus serves trainees who are keen to work in the railway industry. The range of courses offered at the campus is wide. Prospective trainees can apply for certificate or diploma courses, based on the mean and subject grades they attained in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

People interested in mechanical, electrical and civil engineering studies are invited to apply for the May 2024 intake.

RTI is a registered technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institution offering technical, vocational, and entrepreneurship programmes.

The Institute is identified as the Centre of Excellence for capacity building in the railway industry for Kenya and the rest of East Africa.

Here's a list of programmes available for May and September 2024 intakes.
