The gala performance of the Nairobi City County Music Festival showcased plenty of budding talent and creativity in song and dance on Friday evening, leaving the audience yearning for more.

Each of the 52 groups put on a sterling show with an eye on the trophies and cash awards.

Unlike other galas, the organisers had prizes for each of the categories, but the top performers pocketed some cash besides the trophies, thanks to generous corporate sponsorship. It was a show to behold at City Primary School.

A notable contributor was Kenya National Union of Teachers Nairobi branch official Hannington Ochieng, who brought some cash and 14 trophies for the winners.

Trainers of KBA School Felix Mugo (Kiswahili), Anastasia Kigondu (English) and Julia Aluvala of Kibera School For Girls were awarded Sh5,000. Karura SDA music and dance teams trainers also got Sh5,000.

There were some old hands, but they faced stiff competition from some of the new kids on the block like Goodrich School, who thrilled the audience with their Luhya cultural dance, Ibodi.

Ibodi is a marriage ceremony dance practised by the Abhakayo community from Busia County.

The school, that is making its debut, has entered 11 items in the event.

The school’s CEO Gidion Kyalo said: “We decided to enter the festival so that we can see how we measure among the others.”

Among the winners who also qualified for the Metropolitan Regional Music Festival to be held on July 11 at Wote AIC School in Makueni, were Light House, Magoso Primary School and Kianda School.

Murang’a County Music Festival starts today and ends on Thursday at Gitugi Girls High School.
