Key Nairobi city roads closed as Ticad conference starts

What you need to know:

  • Parliament and Taifa roads, City Hall Way and Wabera, Mama Ngina, and Standard streets will be closed until 6pm on Monday.
  • Nairobi traffic boss Leonard Katana also said all heavy commercial vehicles heading towards Nakuru should use the Southern Bypass.

All roads leading directly to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi were closed at midnight, with only accredited people and vehicles allowed in.

This follows the start of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad).

Parliament and Taifa roads, City Hall Way and Wabera, Mama Ngina, and Standard streets will remain closed until 6pm on Monday.

Nairobi County traffic boss Leonard Katana said areas around Hilton and Intercontinental hotels will be out of bounds for the public.

The KenCom bus stage, which mostly serves matatus plying the Community, Yaya Centre and Hurlingham routes, will also be closed.

“Commuters intending to use Public Service Vehicles at KenCom bus stop should do so along Moi Avenue Service Lane (Studio Inn),” he said.

Entry into the city centre from Nyayo Stadium will be restricted to Moi Avenue via Haile Selassie Avenue, Uhuru Highway or Kenyatta Avenue via the GPO roundabout.

Mr Katana also said all heavy commercial vehicles heading towards Nakuru should use the Southern Bypass.

About 10,000 delegates, including more than 35 heads of state, are expected to grace the conference starting Friday.
