Close schools to end arson wave, says former PS Kiyiapi

Former Education Permanent Secretary James ole Kiyiapo has on Wednesday called for the immediate closure of schools to contain the cycle of arson.

The former presidential contender said education stakeholders should convene urgently to resolve the burning issue.

Prof Kiyiapi was addressing the media at an Eldoret hotel.

As of July 27, at least 111 schools have been affected by the wave of arson attacks and walkouts in some institutions.

Dormitories, laboratories, administration buildings have borne the brunt of the arson attacks.

Several leaders including Cord leader Raila Odinga have called on the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to close schools and rescind tough measures imposed on schools to curb exam cheating.

On Thursday, Dr Fred Matiang'i will meet with education stakeholders including the clergy and Kenya Secondary School Heads Association representatives at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to find ways to end unrest in schools.
