IEBC speaks after Roselyn Akombe's exit

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has expressed regret after commissioner Roselyn Akombe resigned seven days to the repeat presidential election.

“We regret the resignation of commissioner Dr Akombe. We will provide more details in due course,” the commission said in its official Twitter account.

RESIGN

In a press briefing at Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said he will not resign.

"I know there are elements who would love nothing more than to hear me announce my resignation at this point.

"In reality, that will be the easier thing to do, but we all have to put Kenya first and that is why I am determined to make this commission work," he said

Mr Chebukati asked electoral officials adversely mentioned over poll irregularities to step aside and allow special project team to manage repeat poll.

He warned political parties to uphold the law and to stop intimidating IEBC commissioners and staff ahead of the October 26 election.

"I will not allow anyone to destroy this country as long as I am a referee in this election," Mr Chebukati said..

During the briefing, Mr Chebukati declined to take questions from the press.

Mr Chebukati was accompanied by October 26 fresh presidential election project team members Salome Oyugi (Legal) and Tabitha Mutemi (Communication).
