A Scottish company has introduced ferry services in Lake Victoria giving a major boost to transport between Kenya and Uganda.

The service stalled over a decade ago after the then operator failed to agree with Ugandan immigration official .

It is estimated that more than 1,000 people use ordinary boats for fishing expeditions and to reach Budalang’i-based beaches namely Marenga, Omena, Bukoma, Mulukoba.

They also connect to Sigulu Island in Uganda every week.

SAFETY

Speaking on Friday during the launch of the ten tonne vessel christened MV Captain Dan Operations, Director of Globology Lake Ferry Services Limited, Mr Jan Teertstra said his company had met the entire safety requirement to roll out the services.

“Our aim is to provide affordable and safe water transport to people living in the islands. We have already been given a go ahead by authorities from both Kenya and Uganda during our meetings in Kisumu, Kampala and Sio-Port,” he said.

The ferry he said had two running engines so that in case one fails, the other takes over.

It is also fitted with life saver jackets for all its 100 passengers and emergency services that are readily accessible at Port Victoria and Sigulu, said Mr Teertstra.

“Officials from the two governments had raised concern that the ferry could offer a platform for illegal crossing and become a conduit for smuggling of illegal goods.  We have beefed up security in conjunction with private companies to ensure only residents are allowed to cross,” he said.

Marenga Beach Management Unit Manager Stephen Musee welcomed the move saying it will revolutionise transport in the lake.
