Former President Mwai Kibaki has been discharged from a Johannesburg hospital where he was admitted more than a week ago.

Mr Kibaki's family has said the former president is in "jovial and high spirits" and will continue to recuperate for a few more days before returning to Kenya.

The former leader underwent a surgery in the South African facility, Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, to remove a blood clot in a vein in his neck.

A South African source told Nation that doctors at the facility located the clot in good time while it was in a relatively safe part of the body.

A clot in the blood is generally dangerous especially if it gets into organs such as the brain, heart and the lungs.
