What you need to know:

  • The Kenya National Association of Private Colleges had sued to stop universities from offering degree and certificate courses.

Universities will continue to offer certificates and diploma courses, the High Court ruled.

Judge Chacha Mwita on Thursday dismissed an application by private colleges, which had asked that universities should not offer diploma and certificate courses.

The Kenya National Association of Private Colleges had sued to stop universities from offering degree and certificate courses.

The association sued the Attorney-General, Commission for University Education, Technical and Vocational Educational Training Authority and the Speaker of the National Assembly.

But universities argued that there was nothing wrong with what they were doing.

In last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, 88,929 candidates scored minimum university entry qualification of a mean C+ and above and will all join universities for degree courses.

This means that both public and private universities and colleges have to scramble for 44,792 candidates who scored C and 61,026 who scored C-.
