Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has extended the contract of Moi University acting Vice-Chancellor Laban Ayiro for six months.

This is the second time that the Cabinet Secretary has extended the contract of Prof Ayiro a move that will give the newly appointed council to embark on recruitment of a substantive Vice-chancellor.

Prof Ayiro was appointed to the position in September following the expiry of Prof Richard Mibey’s term for three months and it was extended in December for three more months.

His appointment to the position in September caused uproar, with some leaders from the region storming the university in protest.

Dr Jeremiah Ntoloi Koshal was last week appointed to be the chairman of the University Council replacing Prof Jenasio Kinyamario whose appointment was revoked.

Other members of the council are; Hamisi Dena, Hilda Muchunku, Elizabeth Obel Lawson, Vincent Chokaa and Daniel K. Rono.

“The chairperson and members of the council will serve for a period of three years, with effect from March 10,” said Dr Matiang’i.

The council is also expected to address financial troubles that are as result of poor management by previous administration and handle disciplinary cases for three top university managers who were suspended last year over financial mismanagement.

At the same time, the government has granted the University Sh300 million for renovation of hostels, construction of lecture halls and amphitheatre.

University Education Principal Secretary Prof Collette Suda gave a go ahead for the money to be transferred to the University.

Prof Ayiro told the university Senate that more funding of Sh350 million is expected in July to complete the construction of more projects.
