Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has claimed the Jubilee government is planning to increase taxes to fill in the deficit in the 2017/2018 budget.

He said Kenyans should oppose such plans.

"Kenya has now a Sh2.6 trillion budget and out of it, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will contribute Sh1.7 trillion and then [there] will remain a gap of one trillion.

"In order to fill in the remaining gap, it means Kenya has to borrow or increase tax. Be aware because they might increase the tax," he said when addressing a rally at Gede Youth Polytechnic in Kilifi.

Additionally, Mr Mudavadi said the Jubilee government does not deserve another term in office because it has derailed the country's economy.

Mr Mudavadi said President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration had implemented policies that hurt the economy, thus they must be voted out to allow a "serious government that will listen to concerns of the people" assume power.

"If you look at Watamu and the Coast in general, the major economic activity is tourism. But because of poor policies, the sector has totally been crippled, rendering thousands of people jobless," he observed.

Mr Mudavadi, also a member of National Super Alliance (Nasa), said the Opposition should take over because it has the welfare of Kenyans at heart.

"When the National Super Alliance comes to power, we will bring in new ideas that will help our people benefit from the resources found in their areas," he said.

He also said Nasa, which comprises ANC, ODM, Ford-Kenya and Wiper parties, will formulate foreign policies that will redeem the country's image globally.

He said he is fit to be Nasa's flag bearer, urging his fellow aspirants to support his bid.

Mr Mudavadi endorsed Edward Mwamuye as ANC's Kilifi North parliamentary hopeful.

Mr Mwamuye is expected to face stiff competition from former county secretary Owen Baya of ODM.

On Sunday, Mr Mudavadi and his team (Nambale MP John Sakwa and Sabatia MP Alfred Agoi) will be in Magarini to endorse former member of the county's Agriculture department, Mwalimu Menza, as the next Magarini MP.
