Abduba Dida slams Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga

What you need to know:

  • Mr Dida wants a fresh team appointed to oversee the October 26 presidential rerun.
  • Mr Dida also asked Nasa to suspend planned anti-IEBC demonstrations for the sake of the country’s economy.

Former presidential candidate Abduba Dida has called for the resignation of some electoral commission officials accused of bungling the August 8 elections.

Mr Dida, who was the Alliance for Real Change candidate, said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials, including the chief executive officer Ezra Chiloba, should resign because the Supreme Court ruling on the presidential election petition indicted the agency.

CULPRITS

He said they should pave way for investigations.

"In one of the meeting with IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati before the August 8 election I had warned about the conduct of Mr Chiloba.

"Now the courts have ruled that transmission of the results was flawed and the officials must be held liable," Mr Dida said Monday in a press conference.

He also targeted commissioner Abdi Guliye.

CANCELLED

On September 1, the court nullified the election, arguing that the Wafula Chebukati-led team committed irregularities.

"A decision is hereby issued that the elections held on August 8 were not conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the applicable law. The results are therefore invalid, null and void," Chief justice David Maraga said.

INVESTIGATION

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko on Saturday directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate individuals who committed electoral offences and file a report within 21 days.

Others in trouble include 10 other IEBC officials and two National Super Alliance members: Musalia Mudavadi and Siaya Senator.

CONTESTERS

Hence, Mr Dida wants a fresh team appointed to oversee the October 26 presidential rerun.

"The commission should get a new team to oversee the election," he said, hinting that he would likely be on the ballot again should the High Court rule in favour of Thirdway Alliance member Ekuru Aukot who wants to be added in the list of contesters.

The IEBC had said that only Jubilee's Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga of Nasa will compete.

Mr Dida also asked Nasa to suspend planned anti-IEBC demonstrations for the sake of the country’s economy.
