Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar on Saturday took the political battle for the control of the county politics to the doorsteps of his rival, Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
Mr Omar used a public function in Kisauni constituency to parade a Mombasa businessman Ali Mbogo as the man to be supported for the parliamentary seat come 2017 against the incumbent, Rashid Bedzimba, a staunch ally of Mr Joho.

Mr Omar urged residents to elect leaders based on their achievements and not based on political parties.

He urged the electorate to shun ethnicity and vote for good leaders who have transformational agenda.

Other counties like Makueni, he said, have voted in educated leaders like Prof Kivutha Kibwana wondering what went wrong with Mombasa.

“If we want development then we should choose leaders who are development oriented. As the secretary general of Wiper Democratic Movement I will choose Ali Mbogo as the MP,” he said. Mr Mbogo is yet to state the party on which he will be seeking to the seat.

The senator urged Mr Mbogo to stand firm, fight for the seat and not be shaken by “some people”, adding it was common knowledge that the incumbent would not be re-elected.

Mr Omar said he is not afraid to speak his mind and claimed people are buying nomination tickets ahead of the General Election.

The senator said children from humble backgrounds should be given opportunities to excel in all spheres of life including politics.

LAND GRABBING AND CORRUPTION

“When it comes to the interest of our people, parties count to nothing but personalities count for everything. People don’t eat political parties or movements,” he said.

“Voting for political parties does not bring education to your children nor does it add any value. It only matters when political parties choose the right people for leadership positions,” he said, adding that if chosen as the governor he would prioritise health and education.

The senator said the Jubilee government must be voted out due to claims of land grabbing and corruption.

“We must also change Mombasa government, on the issue of national politics we will consult at top level about our presidential candidate but down here let us decide on our own,” he added.

On his part, Mr Mbogo urged the electorate to vote for him promising to prioritise education.

He said most youths in Kisauni are drug addicts due to bad leadership.

“The youths lack a future and hope for tomorrow, we must ensure our children are not ensnared by terror groups, some are radicalised and lured into criminal activities,” he said.

He gave Sh500,000 education bursaries for children in Kisauni.
