Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga will today kick off his three-day campaign tour of the vast Turkana County.

In the recent past, the Jubilee Party has been making inroads in the county ahead of the August 8 elections.

Mr Odinga will be welcomed by area Governor Josphat Nanok, who is also the party’s national vice-chairman and is expected to push the agenda of the National Super Alliance (Nasa) during the visit.

He will at the same time capitalise on the extended period for voter listing to urge more potential voters to ensure they register as voters.

According to a statement from the Governor’s Press Service, Mr Odinga is expected to start his journey in banditry-prone Katilia Ward in Turkana East constituency, whose member of Parliament Nicholas Ngikor decamped from Ford-Kenya to join the Jubilee Party.

Later in the day, he will fly to oil-rich Lokichar town in Turkana South.

REGION'S PRIORITIES

On Saturday, he will be in far-flung Kokuro centre in Turkana North constituency that is has been hit hardest by the worsening drought and later tour Kakuma and Lokichogio in Turkana West constituency.

He is expected to finalise his three-day tour with a rally in the populous Lorugum town in Loima constituency and Lodwar in Turkana Central constituency.

National Irrigation Board chairman Malachy Ekal is expected to be presented as the party’s candidate for the Turkana senatorial seat.

Turkana Senator John Munyes, who was previously Ford-Kenya national chairman, and Loima MP Protus Akuja, elected on an ODM party ticket, decamped to the Jubilee Party.

Mr Munyes is eyeing the governor’s seat and already has picked Governor Nanok’s deputy Peter Lokoel as his running mate.

Three weeks ago, Deputy President William Ruto was also in the county to woo voters and accused the county of missing out on the priorities of the region, which he said are water and food, as demonstrated by the rising number of victims of starvation.
