  • Local organising committee moves to attract young fans to world meet.
  • Schools that plant most trees in ‘green’ campaign stand to get more tickets.

Primary school pupils and secondary schools students will gain free entry into Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre competition venue for next month’s IAAF World Under-18 Championships.

The competition will run from July 12 to 16.

However, the Nairobi County’s tourism and trade chief executive Anna Othoro noted that they will have to apply for tickets through their respective schools.

Othoro said the rest of the fans hoping to attend the youth event will be required to pay Sh200 for daily entry while the premier ticket, that will enable fans watch action closer to the track, will go for Sh1,000 which will covering the entire, five-day period.

Online ticket sales have also opened and tickets can be purchased online at: www.buyticket.wu18nairobi2017.com.

Othoro was speaking Wednesday when she officially kicked off the IAAF World Under-18 Championships’ road show campaign by flagging off a caravan that will snake through learning institutions, churches, estates and central business district in the county to popularize the youth event.

Othoro said they are determined to have Kenyans fill the 60,000 seater stadium in Kasarani and cheer ‘Team Kenya’ to victory during the youth competition.
“Besides the caravan, we are also launching both the online and media campaigns to inform people about the event where they are going to win free tickets to the stadium,” said Othoro.

“Our rallying call is fill the stadium, #TwendeKasa.”

Othoro, who was accompanied by the championships’ chief executive officer Mwangi Muthee, said they will also engage in tree planting exercise across the learning institutions where the caravan will pass adding that each school will receive tickets basing on the number of trees planted.

“There will be an arrangement for schools with limited space to plant trees at Karura, Ngong Forest or Kasarani. This is part of the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) campaign for greener championships,” said Othoro.

More so, groups that will take photos of them engaging in IAAF World Under-18 Championships events and post them on social media with the #TwendeKasa hashtag will also get free tickets.

The Wangari Maathai Foundation has also been incorporated in the tree planting sessions where certain sections of the Mau Forest have been designated for the process with Muthee saying that they target to plant over 100,000 trees.
