Wario disbands Nock, forms team to probe Rio Olympics fiasco

  • Wario, who has come under pressure following complaints of mistreatment of Team Kenya at the Rio Olympics, also formed a team to probe the fiasco and report by September 30.

Under-fire Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario on Thursday disbanded the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and transferred its duties to Sports Kenya.

Wario, who has come under pressure following complaints of mismanagement of Team Kenya at the Rio Olympics, also said he had formed a team to probe the fiasco and report by September 30.

"Enough is enough," said Wario.

"I am with immediate effect transferring NOCK's responsibilities to Sports Kenya on an interim basis," said Wario.

During the briefing, Wario who was the most discussed personality by Kenyans on Twitter in the morning mostly via the hashtag #WarioMustGo, absolved himself of blame in the wake of the mismanagement of Team Kenya at the just concluded Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Instead, the CS castigated NOCK officials for high handedness and mismanaging Team Kenya affairs, suggesting he had been powerless to stop this mess from escalating considering the International Olympic Committee rulebook exclusively mandates them to manage the national team's affairs at the Games.

"NOCK (and not the Government) organises the Olympics. Its officials are in charge of equipment, transport, accommodation and have the sole exclusive authority over everything including the colour of uniform," Wario explained.

Interestingly, Wario also revealed he had stepped in to "save the situation" when matters went completely out of hand, as was the case when he ordered the deportation of team Kenya's manager Michael Rotich from Rio.

Rotich was blacklisted after he reportedly demanded bribes to give warnings to athletes about potential doping tests. "I made the decision to deport him because he was shaming our country," the CS confirmed.

The Cabinet Secretary also denied reports in the mainstream media indicating he had been "grilled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations" over the Rio scam, saying he was only "working with the CID and offering them information".
