Sports Kenya has begun construction of the second phase of Marsabit Stadium to upgrade it to international standards.

Speaking to Nation Sport on Tuesday, Marsabit County’s acting chief officer for sports, Mary Amina, said Sports Kenya has given them Sh279 million to construct pitches and a pavilion.

Amina said the county government had allocated another Sh77 million for the construction of terraces which will have a capacity of up to 5,000 people.

“The county allocated Sh30 million this year while another Sh47 million will be catered for in the next budget. The stadium will accommodate more than 13,000 people with two pavilions accommodating 3,000 people each,” she said. The contractors and national government officials plan to hand over the complete stadium to the county government by November.

Amina said the project would boost the economy of the county through sports activities while also helping nurture sports talent among local youth.

“When the project is complete, we hope to host national and county sporting activities,” she said. The stadium will also have a rugby pitch and an athletics track. The county government plans to construct basketball and volleyball courts and a swimming pool later.
