Morjaria wins CIC series

  • Playing off handicap 18, Morjaria carded an impressive 40 points, a round that included 10 bogeys and a double bogey at the 16th and 18th to combine 21 and 19 points.

Veteran Nakuru golfer Kirit Morjaria was in an excellent form over the weekend as he beat a big field of 152 golfers, to claim the overall title during the fourth leg of the CIC Insurance golf series at the tough playing Nakuru Golf Club course.

Playing off handicap 18, Morjaria carded an impressive 40 points, a round that included 10 bogeys and a double bogey at the 16th and 18th to combine 21 and 19 points.

“Today was just one of those days when everything you do on the course just works. I have not won anything here for years and i am so delighted having won an CIC event. My playing partners were wonderful lot to play with and they contribute a great deal in my winning’’ said Morjaria, who beat men winner Sarabjit Sagoo of Njoro by one point as Sagoo posted 20 and 19 points.

Another Njoro player Hamphrey Kuria was third with 38 points after beating lady winner Mary Kiruthi and Pancras Kuria on countback. Taking the first nine with a score of 21 points was Michael Mululu, while the second nine went to Peter Mwai on 22 points.

As expected, Paul Muhia and Esther Karuga won the longest drive contest, while Kiprotich Kemboi was the nearest to pin winnner. Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, CIC Insurance managing director CIC Life Ezekiel Owuor said his company will continue its partnership with the Nakuru Golf Club.

“We have been supporting this even since 2010 and will continue to do so because of the support we have received from residents of Nakuru County, " said Awuor, who led a strong team of senior managers to Nakuru for the event which also attracted the country’s National rugby sevens players among the former sevens team captain Hamphrey Kayange, and Golf Park’s Lavin Asego among others.

This weekend, Nakuru Golf club will once again be the place to be as the club host the chairman’s (Karori Kahuthu) tourney.

At Thika Sports Club, Fr Peter Kaigua playing off handicap 17, produced an amazing 45 points in a high scoring 95th Anniversary tournament to claim the men’s first prize.

He beat Ben Mahui by three points, as the handicap five Simon Ndungu finished third on 39 points. Club chairman Betty Mutua was equally in an excellent form as she posted 40 points to win the ladies first prize ahead of Mumbi Njuguna on 36 points.

The nines went to Njeri Mureithi on 22 and Winnie Mugo who posted 21 points. In the guest category, M.K. Karingu won with 33 points. Anthony Kabucho and Judy Waihenya won the longest drive and taking the nearest to pin was Ben Mahui.
