Ngige endures bad final day to win Diani Masters

Thika’s Simon Ngige walked away with the “Green Jacket’’ in the 2017 Prime Bank Diani Beach Masters golf tournament despite a poor round in Saturday’s close round.
Ngige, who led in three rounds, shot six over par 78 in the fourth and final round, to complete a four-rounds aggregate of five over par 293 to take the green jacket plus the winner’s cash prize of Sh110,000 at the Leisure Lodge Beach and Golf Resort course.
He beat Mumias Golf Club’s Dismas Indiza by four shots as Muthaiga’s Greg Snow and Kopan Timbe tied for the third place on 299.
Incidentally, Ngige, Indiza and Snow all shot rounds of 78 at the tough playing Leisure Lodge Course.
However, it was the heat that took its toll on the players as well as the greens which were a bit soft.
“I real played very badly partly because of the heat though the greens were also difficult as some were not very smooth while others were fine, but I am still happy finishing second. I will start preparing for the Tanzania Open in the first week of November,’’ said Indiza.
Whilst Timbe and Snow tied on 299, Royal Nairobi’s Erick Ooko shot one over par 73 to tie on 301 with John Wangai, Anil Shah and Tony Omuli.
The amateurs were, however, still on the course battling it out for their amateur title in the tournament sponsored Prime Bank.
Away at Nyali Golf and Country Club, Vet Lab Sports Club’s Edwin Mudanyi shot level par in the second round yesterday morning to lead the field of 84 players in the Kenya Open Amateur Championship at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course.
Mudanyi had posted four over par 75 in the first round played on Friday.
He was leading by one shot from round one leader Jay Sandhu of Royal at the close of round two.
Sandhu carded five over par 76 for 148 while Nyali’s long hitting George Munyao was tying on 150 with Railway’s George Felix, Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo and Nyali’s John Timbe.
The third round was still on at the time of writing and going into today’s fourth and final round of the event sponsored by Africa Gas Oil Company, Deloitte, Equity Bank and Windhoek Premium Lager.
