Top guns stay in the hunt at Dala 7s

What you need to know:

  • The trio are the only sides that are still in contention of the 2017 National Sevens Series title as the six-leg championship draws to a close on Sunday.
  • Series leaders Kabras finished top of Pool “A” unbeaten.

The race for the National Sevens Series title hits the home stretch Sunday after Kabras Sugar, Impala Saracens and Homeboyz made it to the Cup quarter-finals of Dala Sevens at the Mamboleo Showground, Kisumu.

The trio are the only sides that are still in contention of the 2017 National Sevens Series title as the six-leg championship draws to a close on Sunday.

Series leaders Kabras finished top of Pool “A” unbeaten after they crushed Daystar 26-0 while second-placed Impala Saracens eased through as Pool “B” winners after battling to beat Kisii 10-5.

Homeboyz, who are both Dala Sevens and Series defending champions, mauled Western Bulls 27-0 in their last Pool “D” duel while Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) beat Blak Blad 17-7 to top Pool “C”.

Kabras have 85 points followed by Impala and Homeboyz on 80 and 78 respectively.

Victory for Kabras Sugar or a third-place finish should see them seal their Series victory. Victory for Impala Saracens will not guarantee them the Series win as it will depend on Kabras Sugar’s run.

If Impala win and Kabras Sugar finish third they will all tie on 102 points but Kabras Sugar will toss to the Series victory since they currently enjoy a better aggregate.

Homeboyz have no otherwise apart from retaining Dala Sevens title if they hope to retain the Series crown.

Makueni and Webuye made it through to their first ever main Cup quarterfinals after performing well in their pools. Also joining them in the Cup quarters were Blak Blad and Western Bulls.

Makueni recovered from their Pool “A” opening 12-0 defeat to Kabras Sugar to crush Daystar 31-0 and hosts Kisumu 17-0 to ease through to the quarters.

Webuye, on the other hand, put behind their 36-0 Pool “B” opening tie loss to Impala Saracens to whack Kisii and Egerton University 17-7 and 14-12 respectively to also sail through.

It’s now left to be known whether Makueni and Webuye will continue with their fairytale run against bigwigs Homeboyz and Kenya Commercial Bank respectively on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

However, the focus will be on three main protagonists, who are chasing this year’s Series crown as the battle draws to a close.
