What you need to know:

  • Before making a purchase, a farmer should identify, understand and verify the qualities of the machine
  • Even if it attracts a good price, one should be able to tell the potential weak points of any model. Consult a mechanic to help you know the potential problem areas
  • Light machines are prone to wear and tear fast

Machines are an indispensable part of agriculture and feeding the world.

In the recent years, more complicated machines have led to improvement in agriculture practices and productivity while decreasing labour.

However, farmers have remained stuck with old technology because of the high cost of machines. Some opt for second hand ones.

“Before making a purchase, a farmer should identify, understand and verify the qualities of the machine," Mr Simon Mureta, a farmer in Tharaka-Nithi County says.

“Even if it attracts a good price, one should be able to tell the potential weak points of any model. Consult a mechanic to help you know the potential problem areas.”

Ms Fridah Karimi, supplier for a coffee factory in Meru County, advises farmers to check on gears, especially if they are made of steel.

“Light machines are prone to wear and tear fast,” she says, adding that it should have stable and firm gauges.

“The farmer should ensure that the machine has the right motors.”

Mr Stanley Kiambati, also a farmer, says one should find out if the dealer offers after-sale services.

"A machine whose spares are hard to find is problematic. Let the farmer buy from a reputable company,” Mr Kiambati says.

“The buyer should check on the frame and note any repairs needed for moving parts and common wear points.”

All used machine should be run through before a purchase is made. They should also be used for their intended purposes only, be cleaned after use and kept in their proper places.

Pointed parts should be covered all the time.

Some dealers repaint old machines to make them look new. Farmers should exercise a lot of caution when buying implements. They should get training on farm equipment.
