The construction of a Sh6 million factory in Vihiga County that will produce fertiliser from rabbit urine is set to begin next month.

This comes following the approval of the site.

County Woman Representative Dorcas Kedogo told the Nation that the factory will be ready in October.

“The urine will be collected from residents who rear rabbits. The factory will then turn the waste into fertiliser to be used by farmers for planting and topdressing,” said Ms Kedogo.

The plan to build the factory comes after the lawmaker launched a campaign in the region for the residents to venture into rabbit keeping.

“The factory will boost the rearing of rabbits in this county,” Ms Kedogo told the Nation at the Emmabwi Church of God in Emuhaya yesterday .
“The factory will create employment for farmers and many of our people,” she said.

She urged locals to embrace rabbit rearing as the factory will rely on urine from the domestic animal as the main raw material.

The region received Sh23 million from the newly established Women Affirmative Fund.

“The Sh6 million is part of the Sh23 million we were allocated for women in this county. We want the allocation to be increased in the next financial year for it to benefit more women,” said Ms Kedogo.
