Five members of a village in Siaya County drowned on Saturday after their speed boat capsized at Sango Bridge in River Nzoia.

Four others, who were in the ill-fated speed boat, were rescued in the 1pm incident according to Siaya County Police Commander Francis Kooli.

Mr Kooli said that the five who died in the 1pm incident were from Asere Village in Alego-Usonga.

Sango Bridge connects Ugunja and Alego-Usonga constituencies.

According to Mr Chris Owala a resident of Rabar village, the nine boarded the speed boat which had been hired by one of them from Sio Port to search of the body of a man who drowned in the swollen river a few days ago.

The Siaya County police boss said the incident was reported by Umala Sub-Location Assistant Chief Grace Anyango Oloo.

Those who died in the tragedy were identified as Kennedy Odhiambo Ojude, Bernard Masawa, George Oduor Audi, George Ojwang Orecho and Joseph Omondi Ochieng.

The coxswain, according to the police, was rushed to Ambira Sub-County Hospital in critical condition while the other three were in stable condition.

The administrator said that local divers and the Alego-Usonga Sub-County security teams are going on with the search for the five bodies.

The river burst its banks as a result of the heavy rains pounding various parts of the country.
