Governor Samboja puts ‘lazy’ contractors on notice

Taita Taveta governor Granton Samboja has warned contractors who do shoddy works that they risk not being paid.

Mr Samboja, who has been commissioning projects in the last one week, said that ‘lazy’ contractors may also be blacklisted for county projects.

Mr Samboja warned contractors against sub-standard work and unnecessary delay in completing projects.

More than 100 projects have been lined for implementation in the county’s 20 wards.

Mr Samboja’s government has been under sharp criticism lately over failure to adequately use development funds.

SUBSTANDARD WORK

“My government will not pay for substandard work. I want my people to get value for money,” he said.

The governor, however, assured contractors who will have done a good job that they will be paid promptly.   

Mr Samboja directed the county department for Roads and Infrastructure to ensure that no corruption is reported during the implementation of projects.

“Make sure these roads are constructed according to the Bill of Quantities,” he warned.

Bill of Quantities is a detailed statement of work, prices, dimensions, and other details, for the erection of a building by contract.

EMPLOY LOCALS

Mr Samboja also encouraged contractors to employ skilled and non-skilled locals.

“If any contractor fails to give you jobs you can chase him away," he told residents.

The governor, who said that devolution came to benefit locals, urged the residents not to allow contractors to do shoddy work.  

He said his government had already settled a number of pending bills which it inherited from the previous regime.

Contractors have been claiming unpaid dues since 2014.
