Suspects in shooting of ex-Garissa staff Mukhtar granted bail

Two suspects accused of shooting former Garissa County finance executive Idriss Mukhtar have been granted Sh500,000 bail.
Based on a probation report filed in court, Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi ruled that neither Mr Mohamud Hussein Aden nor Ms Juliet Charity Njoki are flight risks or a threat to witnesses.
"In the circumstances above and the probation report, I find no reason to deny the accused persons bail," Mr Andayi said on Friday
The two denied attempting to kill Mr Mukhtar on May 19 and a second charge of conspiracy to murder Mr Muktar's family lawyer Charles Kanjama, an offence they allegedly committed between July 1 and September 27 this year.
The court heard that the two - jointly with others not before court - shot Mr Muktar at White Star Restaurant in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
PROBATION
Chief Magistrate Andayi had released them on bond on September 21 but the prosecution filed an appeal at the High Court.
Mr Kanjama wanted the two to remain in custody until key witnesses testify.
Judge Grace Ngenye directed that a comprehensive probation report be tabled in court for consideration by Mr Andayi.
On Friday, the suspects were instructed to produce in court two contact persons, deposit their travel documents in court and abide by the conditions set for them by the investigating officer.
