Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri has apologised over a video showing him in a compromising situation with an unidentified woman.

Mr Ndambiri on Wednesday evening said that he was a victim of an extortion gang.

The video of the politician, that has since gone viral, emerged on Tuesday evening.

In the video, Mr Ndambiri was seen being assaulted by unknown people alongside a woman who claimed she was married.

In his statement, Mr Ndambiri apologised to his family and Kirinyaga people over the video being circulated on social media.

VIDEO

“I would like to take this opportunity to get ahead of the video and story in circulation. Right now what matters most is my family and my people of Kirinyaga who look up to me for guidance. To them, I say sorry,” he said.

However, Mr Ndambiri said he was set up by a gang whose aim was to extort him.

He claimed that the gang had been targeting politicians.

EXTORTION

“There are gangsters targeting politicians for purposes of extortion. I was set up by the gang took me through an agonising moment. And for the thugs, I say, your days are numbered,” he said.

He said that the gang would not deter his vision to serve his family and the people of Kirinyaga County.

However, it is still unclear when or the location where the video was filmed. Several leaders had condemned the video and called for the arrest of those who recorded it.

Kenya Film Classification Board Chief Executive Ezekiel Mutua said the recording was an invasion of privacy.

BLACKMAIL

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria accused gangs of trying to blackmail politicians.

Some leaders, who pointed out at blackmail, condemned the people who leaked the video.

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga, in a Facebook post, urged the police to arrest the people behind the leak of the video that has since gone viral.

“Recording someone when he/she is in a compromising position and sharing the same with the public is wrong! Think about the emotional torture and ridicule you're exposing the family of that person to. No one here is flawless. The police should reign in on the thugs who held the Kirinyaga DG under siege and apprehend them to serve as a punitive lesson to others who may be harbouring such intentions in the future,” she wrote.

Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, however, said that the deputy governor should fight his own battles.

DIVERT ATTENTION

“For those trying to divert attention from our pursuit of justice for Ms Martha Miano (the woman who was assaulted during Ruguru Ward by-election) by suggesting that I should also pick up the issue of justice for ‘boy-child’ DG Kirinyaga - please note that DG Kirinyaga is at a much higher pecking order than even I am so he can actually do more about that for himself, than I can do for him. Plus, I focus on helping those less privileged who are dealing with privileged bullies,” he said.

Atheists in Kenya (AIK) have called for the immediate resignation of the Kirinyaga deputy governor.

“This matter raises serious moral issues for us as a country. In line with Chapter Six of our Constitution (Leadership and Integrity), we ask the Deputy Governor of Kirinyaga to resign, since he has lost the trust and respect of the people of Kirinyaga County as a leader,” AIK said in a statement sent to newsrooms.
