Rehabilitation of the Lamu World Heritage Site, that will see 100 streetlights put up at the seafront, has started.

The Sh40 million project is aimed at sprucing up the town’s image to attract investors and tourists.

Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy, who initiated the project, said 100 streetlights will be installed from Lamu County Hospital to Wiyoni area.

He said the project will also involve renovating the island's main road.

The Governor said the project is funded County Government in partnership with five other organisations.

The organisations are Kenya Commercial Bank, Diamond Trust Bank, ABC Bank, Equity Bank and Gulf African Bank. Each company will put up 10 streetlights.

Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Airports Authority will donate 25 streetlights each.

Mr Timamy said the project will be completed by November before the annual Lamu Cultural Festival.

He said the street lighting project is expected to boost tourism in the county.

“With better lighting in place, tourists will be able to walk freely without any fear. We want to ensure the comfort of the people and visitors of Lamu,” added Mr Timamy.
