One man died on the spot while five others sustained injuries on Friday night after a lorry they were travelling in overturned at Naikarra area in Narok West Sub-County.

The truck was headed to Narok Town when it veered off the road.

SPEEDING

The man was thrown under the truck and it took the efforts of residents and motorists to free his body from the wreckage.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was speeding and people were hanging precariously from it.

“The truck came speeding downhill before it overturned on the side of the road,” said Mr Joseph Kuyo.

He said being a market day at Naikarra trading centre, trucks tend to overload their vehicles and people sit on top of the goods while others hang on the truck rails.

CAUTION

While confirming the incident, Narok County police boss Joseph Kisombe said the injured were taken to Narok County Referral Hospital. The body was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

Mr Kisombe said the bad state of the road and human era contributed to the accident.

He also condemned reckless drivers and drunk driving, saying they endanger the lives of other road users.

“If a driver must take alcohol, let them do so when they are not on the road instead of putting their lives and those of others in danger,” Mr Kisombe added.

“I am also appealing to all road users to ensure they observe all traffic rules so that we stop losing lives on the roads.”

Investigations were underway to determine if the truck driver was drunk and the cause of the accident.
