What you need to know:

  • The student's body was found after other students had left for their schools.
  • Police and an education official question why no teacher reported a missing student.

Police in Murang’a have launched investigations into the death of a Form Three student whose body was found floating in a swimming pool.

The student from St Paul Gathukiini Secondary School had gone for a swimming competition at Elite School, a few metres from Murang'a Town.

NO REPORT

Students from eight other schools were participating in the competition.

Murang’a East OCPD Japheth Ogalo said the incident happened between 10am and 3pm but the body was found at 5pm by a swimming pool attendant when students had returned to their schools.

No games master from any school had reported the student missing, he said.

"It beats the logic that no games teacher took a roll call to identify whether all his or her students were safe and secure before returning to their respective schools.

"This is very irresponsible of the teachers and we shall apprehend the culprit to assist us with investigations," the OCPD said.

PROBE

Murang'a East Director of Education Richard Ng'ang'a said he had instructed all games teachers in the eight schools to submit reports by Monday indicating the number of students who participated in the games.

He also asked them to show cause why they did not verify whether their students were safe after the games.

Mr Ng’ang’a said whoever would be found liable would be prosecuted.

"I want the teachers involved to explain the whole incident and indicate how they could embark on a journey back to their schools without one student as this amounts to negligence and ignorance," Mr Ng’ang’a said.

Efforts to contact the school did not bear fruits as the management did not respond to our calls.
