Seven people have died on the spot after a bus hit a truck on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

According to Koibatek OCPD Agnes Kamau, the accident occurred around 5.30am when a bus heading to Kakamega from Mombasa rammed into a trailer travelling in the same direction. “The bus driver was attempting to overtake the truck but rammed it as he tried to return to his lane to avoid a head-on-collision with an oncoming truck,” she said.

She added that the driver of the ill-fated bus escaped and police had launched a manhunt.

“Both drivers survived but the driver of the bus escaped immediately after the accident,” added Ms Kamau.

She said the injured were rushed to various hospitals in Eldoret Town.

“Twenty five were taken to various hospitals including Moi Teaching and Referral while five were taken to Mercy Mission Hospital in Eldama Ravine,” she said. The OCPD urged drivers to exercise caution while plying the route. “The weather was foggy and it seems the driver was speeding,” she said
