Three die as speeding matatu hits varsity bus in Murang’a

Three people died after the matatu they were travelling in hit a bus along the Kenol-Murang’a road on Monday.

Several other passengers in the matatu were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

According to Murang’a County Police Commander Josephat Kinyua, among the dead is Mbugwa Sub-Location Assistant Chief Michael Nduati.

“The assistant chief had just come from a meeting at Kenol where he had delivered Huduma Namba registration report. The matatu he was travelling in hit the bus as it tried to overtake a motorcycle,” Mr Kinyua said.

He said the other two who died was a man and a child. The police boss said the speeding matatu hit the bus as it was overtaking a motorcycle.

Eye witnesses said the matatu belonging to Namu Sacco was speeding when it hit the bus belonging to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The bus was ferrying clinical medicine students to Maragua and Endarasha hospitals.  

The scene of the crash is a known black spot. In 2011, eight family members died in a road crash along the same stretch of the road.

Mr Kinyua urged motorists to drive carefully.

ACCIDENTS

“Drivers should be careful since the area is prone to accidents,” he noted.

Maragua MP Mary Waithira described the administrator as a honest civil servant who carried out his duties diligently.

The lawmaker said negotiations between her office and the KeNHA were underway to ensure the Kenol-Murang’a road is expanded.
