Devolution secretary and Tana River governor are set to tour the flood-ravaged county on Monday amid claims that leaders are using relief food to gain political mileage.

On Sunday, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa warned leaders in the county against using the relief food provided by government for political gain.

Speaking after a meeting with Tana River County Governor Dhadho Godhana, Mr Wamalwa said it was unfortunate some leaders were using their time in office to sabotage government efforts.

"The relief rations have been government's support for the victims of floods in the county and anybody using that for political gain is not doing well,” said Mr Wamalwa.

Mr Wamalwa said the government has dispatched enough food to the county's floods victims and would provide support in airlifting food where roads are impassible.

He said every constituency has been given not less than 10,000 bags of food, adding that the government was spending Sh20 million monthly for food supplies for the victims.

Governor Godhana presented the Devolution CS with a report of the cost of the floods on the county.

Less than a week ago, a group of elders from the Orma community in Waldena harshly condemned a section of leaders in government for using relief food to allegedly sabotage Mr Godhana's leadership.

The elders claimed some leaders who lost in the 2017 elections were inciting residents against his administration.

The food distribution has seen former governor Hussein Dado, currently the Devolution ministry’s chief administrative secretary, tour parts of the county to distribute aid and participate in rescue missions.
