A case in which a primary school teacher in Meru is charged with sexually assaulting 10 pupils will be heard on Thursday.

The prosecution is scheduled to present 10 girls aged between eight and eleven to testify before Meru Chief Magistrate Lucy Ambasi.

Led by Ms Margaret Matheka, the prosecution has 15 witnesses, including parents of the minors.

The court had earlier directed the prosecution and the investigating officer corporal Rosemary Njoki to speed up and supply the defence with witness statements to avoid delaying the case, which the magistrate noted was of public interest.

Mr Julius Mwiti, 45, a teacher at Mugae Primary School, is out on Sh1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.

He denied 10 charges of sexual assault and 10 alternative ones for practicing indecent acts with children when he appeared in court to take plea on May 15.

The court heard that Mwiti sexually assaulted the girls mostly in Standard Four since January this year, with the recent offences being committed on March 8 at the school in Rwarera location, Buuri District.

However, the hearing will be conducted in-camera due to the age of the complainants.
