Heads of departments at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will be required to have Master’s degree in a new human resources management model adopted by the organisation.

This is meant to instill professionalism at East Africa’s largest sea port, KPA board chairman Danson Mungatana said on Thursday.

“At the moment we cannot give exact figures of how many heads of departments have not attained this qualification,” Mr Mungatana said.

He however clarified that no employee would be sacked for not having the qualifications as there was a framework in place that would encourage, among other things, the affected workers to opt for early retirement.

“We recognise those who have worked for the authority for those years and cannot radically render them jobless,” he said when he officially opened this year’s Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) congress at the Serena Beach Hotel in Mombasa.

Mr Samson Osero, the IHRM executive director, said the most serious challenge for organisations was failure to implement sound HR policies.

“We have very good HR policies in the country that have not been implemented and which are important for the development of our organisations,” Mr Osero said.
