At least 20 students from the Technical University of Mombasa have been arrested during a protest in the coastal town.

The students were arrested Monday during a riot at Buxton junction along Abdel Nasser Road in Mombasa.

They were demonstrating against "tough sudden rules" introduced by the university’s administration.

During the protest, the students damaged vehicles plying along the Nyali Bridge and barricaded roads, disrupting transport.

They threw stones at the General Service Unit and Administration Police officers who had been deployed to calm the situation.

The police officers had to shoot in the air to disperse the unruly students.
