Nairobi City County Government has promised to renovate Kamukunji grounds.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Saturday directed county officials to ensure the field, which has been neglected for decades, is renovated to enable it host sports events.

Speaking during the Nairobi monthly clean-up day at the Kamukunji grounds, Mr Sonko told County Secretary Peter Kariuki, Finance CEC Allan Igambi and his Environment counterpart Larry Wambua to ensure funds are allocated for the exercise.

“I want the renovation of Kamukunji grounds to include installation of recreational facilities. This must be done to give the youth a chance to discover their talents. My government will fence off the grounds to keep land grabbers, who are eyeing the land, away,” said Mr Sonko.

LAND GRABBING

The Kamukunji grounds hosted the Saba Saba rally, which ushered in multiparty democracy in the early 1990s.

Mr Sonko has ordered the demolition of a wall at Burma Market which is said to have been erected by a private developer.

The governor appealed to city residents to support his government’s initiative of cleaning the city.

“Over the last three months, we have taken our monthly clean-up campaign to every ward in Nairobi. Under the slogan ‘my waste, my responsibility’, my government will join residents and other elected leaders every month in cleaning up the city,” he said.

ILLEGAL DUMPING

“Our goal is to ensure that city residents become responsible in dealing with illegal dumping of solid waste,” added Mr Sonko who took part in the clean-up exercise at Mihang’o, Muthurwa market and Kamukunji.

The monthly clean up exercise coincided with the World Clean-up Day that was marked globally on Saturday. Other monthly clean ups will be held every first Saturday of the month in Nairobi’s 85 Wards.

During the event, Mr Wambua urged city residents to help the county government in keeping the environment clean.

“I call upon Nairobians to continue taking part in the monthly clean up exercise to guarantee a safe and clean environment,” he said.
