More water for Nairobi as Ndakaini Dam levels rises

Nairobi residents will get a reprieve after Governor Mike Sonko said the ongoing water rationing will reduce significantly after water levels at the Ndakaini Dam increased.

The governor made the announcement when he toured the dam in Murang'a on Wednesday. He said the dam is currently 90 per cent full.

Mr Sonko said Mathare, Ngara, Mlango Kubwa among others estates in Eastlands which have been getting water for four days will now get water every day of the week.

Thindigwa, Ndunda which have been getting water for three days will now receive the vital commodity for every day of the week.

The city county boss directed the Nairobi Water Company to establish water kiosks in all the parts of Nairobi to compliment the water supply.

Mr Sonko announced that due to increased water supply, there will be improved pressures on Kayole, Komarock and other areas to enhance water supply.

"We are happy to report that the ongoing rationing in Nairobi will be done away with since Ndakaini dam is almost full while Sasumwa and Ruiru dam are full and overflowing, we shall only revert to the previous water supply when the levels of water drops," the governor said.

The Governor who was accompanied by Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company and Gatanga MP Engineer Ngugi Nduati said as a way of fighting water cartels in Nairobi will be dealt with noting that officials of the Nairobi Sewerage Company who have been manning the Ndakaini dam will be reshuffled.

He said following the partnership between the national government and Nairobi County Government, three dams will be constructed to boost the water supply in the Kenya's capital city.

"According to the national water plan we should be having at least one dam for a period of three years and this has never happened since 1994 when this dam was constructed however due to the partnership between my government and national government the three dams will be constructed by 2026," he said noting that upon completion the dams shall fully meet the Nairobi's water demands.

On his part Gatanga MP urged the Nairobi county government to construct a Sewerage around the village where Ndakaini is located to give back to the community.

"Since water is drawn from this village your government should ensure that it establishes the sewerage and plant trees since they were never planted when the dam was being constructed," the MP said.
