Truck veers off road, kills one, injures another in Nakuru

One person died while another one sustained injuries following an accident at Lanet area on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

Nakuru Deputy Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Daniel Kitavi said the Monday morning accident, which involved two vehicles, occurred after a cargo truck hit a pedestrian before it rammed a stationary vehicle. 

According to Mr Kitavi, the driver of the truck that was heading towards Nakuru, hit a pedestrian who died on the spot.

“The driver lost control of the truck which and swerved in the opposite lane and hit a vehicle which was parked just beside the road,” said Mr Kitavi.

TRANSPORTING WHEAT

The driver of the truck, which was ferrying wheat, fled after the accident.

The residents scrambled for sacks of wheat which was scattered on the road, causing a heavy traffic snarl up. Police officers had a rough time controlling the surging crowd at the scene of the accident.

Several people, including matatu drivers and touts, were arrested as they tried to loot. The residents, who spoke to the Nation, complained that the road lacks road signs.

ACCIDENTS

“This highway is notorious for accidents. We blame the government for not putting in place precautionary measures to mitigate frequent road carnages,” he said.

Mr Kitavi, however, said cases of accidents on the highway had declined significantly. The wreckages of the vehicles were towed to Nakuru Central Police Station.
