What you need to know:

  • My mother has been ill since I was in Standard Seven. She has chronic kidney disease and has been on dialysis since then.
  • She sacrificed all her investments to pay our school fees and provide shelter.
  • Even after my father’s death, she remained strong and always encourages my siblings and I.
  • I still wonder where she draws her strength from.

My mother Mary Too is a fighter, an iron lady and a hard worker.

Born into a humble family, she worked hard and helped to ensure her siblings went to school.

My mother has been ill since I was in Standard Seven. She has chronic kidney disease and has been on dialysis since then. Despite being unwell, she has stood the test of time and remained strong, and made everyone believe that God's timing is best.

And even with the financial burden on her and my dad due to the huge bills for dialysis and regular hospital admissions, my mother has done her best for us.

She sacrificed all her investments to pay our school fees and provide shelter. She is a strong woman, and people who meet her usually cannot reconcile how strong she is with what she has gone through.

Since she was first diagnosed, hospital visits and treatment is what I know best. She has to travel to Nairobi twice a week for dialysis.

Late last year, we lost our dad to the same disease – kidney failure. At first, mum was devastated. She was the one who had held my father’s hand in the dialysis clinic. And when I would sit next to them; all I saw was hope. They made me believe in family and love.

Even after my father’s death, she remained strong and always encourages my siblings and I. She always tells us that all will be well. I still wonder where she draws her strength from.
