215 teachers ask Knut to help reverse their transfers

Some 215 school heads in the delocalisation programme have asked the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) to help reverse their transfers.
Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion on Monday said the union has received letters from the affected teachers, and would soon present a report to the conciliation committee that was formed by the Labour ministry last month.
“We are in the final stages of filing a comprehensive report on delocalisation. We will use this to build our case,” Mr Sossion said.
Institution of family
The Labour and Relations Court ordered the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Knut to continue holding conciliation meetings and file a report by January 30.
Knut and TSC have been feuding over several matters since last year.
The issues include promotion of more than 30,000 teachers with higher qualifications, delocalisation, teacher performance appraisal development, performance contracts and career progression.
When the two parties appeared in court a week ago, Knut accused TSC of insincerity. Yesterday, Mr Sossion said, TSC must stop transferring teachers to other counties “to preserve the institution of the family”.
Last year, President Kenyatta told the commission to review the programme.
Knut accuses TSC of implementing policies without consulting education players.
TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia, however, argues that delocalisation will enhance national cohesion.
TSC introduced the programme two years ago.
